Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for healing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also can be used to treat certain patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It may also used in other situations as suggested by your doctor.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Consult your doctor regarding the dosage suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing healing with Allopurinol. It may take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this medicine even if you feel well.
Additional Information
Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects can worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Use Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly dangerous tasks until you know how you react to this drug. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms don't improve or if they worsen, talk to your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been advised. Do not take less or more or take it more often than recommended by your physician.
