Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for curing of gout. It is used to cure high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also can be used to treat certain patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It may also can be used in other situations as directed by your doctor.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Talk to your doctor regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing curing with Allopurinol. It can take 2 to 6 weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking Allopurinol even if you feel well.

Allopurinol can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly negative tasks until you know how you react to this medicine. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, talk to your physician. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Don't take less or more or take it more often than determined by your doctor.
