Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for curing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to treat certain patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It can also used in other situations as directed by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Notify your physician regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing curing with Allopurinol. It may take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this medicine even if you feel well.
More Information
Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Use Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly negative tasks until you know how you respond to this drug. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, visit your physician. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been directed. Don't take less or more or take it more often than directed by your physician.
