Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for curing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also can be used to cure certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It can also can be used in other situations as advised by your doctor.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken by mouth. Visit your physician regarding the dosage suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing treatment with Allopurinol. It may take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this pill even if you feel well.

Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly negative tasks until you know how you react to this product. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, talk to your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been determined.
